Harper cut Ignatieff off at the knees with a few rather insulting 'concessions', and now the Liberals will support the Harper report card even though it is full of half-truths, misleading definitions, and vagueness.
It is time for Ignatieff to fire his advisors and get new ones; perhaps some who actually have some political sense, an appreciation of what politics is about, who know what framing means, and who are prepared to fight battles rather than recommend retreats.
Harper made Ignatieff look foolish and in turn the Liberal Party looks foolish.
If Ignatieff really wants to lead this party, he must take stock of his political reactions, and figure out what is not working. And most of what he is doing right now is not working. And then figure out how to change it before it is too late.
The nonsensical argument that Canadians do not want an election now is a craven caving in to the Harper framing, and for the Liberals in the House to parrot this is unforgiveable.
A summer election is not the issue.
The issue is whether Canada has the right government for these perilous times.
And most Canadians would agree that we do not have that.
What a sad week this has been.

I couldn't agree with you more but we seem to be in the minority. I'm just so sorry we never had a leadership race - Bob Rae seems to understand what Ignatieff can't get. Very sad. Ignatieff forgets that a leader needs to lead and to frame the argument.
When will the party brass wake up and get with it? December is the time to hold a truly democratic leadership convention.
Ignatieff is a disaster.
I understand your frustration; me too. Kinsella offers a different perspective which makes for a good read.
The economy has yet to START down and it all lays at the feet of Harper so a few more months won't hurt.
foottothefire
Harper didn't make Ignatieff or the Liberal party look foolish; Ignatieff did that all on his own.
I couldn't have said it better myself. Bob Rae would have known when to act. Ignatieff may find himself in difficulty within his own caucus. Too much more of this and the knives will be out again. The people surrounding Ignatieff have too much in common with Harper's goup.
Cat if you are looking for what the LPC is doing wrong, here's a start:
'The economy has yet to START down and it all lays at the feet of Harper so a few more months won't hurt.'
Thing is, Canadians may very well appreciate that Harper has had all of this laid at his feet,
with no help from the Liberals.
Canadians may also find the Liberal attitude 'let Harper wear the recession'
not what they are looking for in a party that wants to run the country.
One might say that Iggy is out of touch with the way that politics is played in Canada but think this had more to do with his advisors.
One of the biggist braggards for an election was Kinsella and I'd say he needs to go. His Day campaign might have been his best but that was still against a noob with little support in the rest of Canada. Even with the unbalance, his campaign was dirty and personal and thats probably the driving factor in the tone of the latest campaigns.
All the talk about not going to negative is hopeless when you have a guttersnipe like Kinsella around.
How about a party merger - the Liberal Conservative Party of Canada.
Wow!Iron Mike really means it when he says don't mess with me.
Yawn - attack, attack, attack, attack.
It's boring, boring, boring, boring.
The Con trolls (people without brains) and NDP supporters(Rae).....cut out the BS
I was disappointed too. I wanted an election. But I don't think the Liberal party is in fighting form yet (although it's making great strides). Plus, polls showed a huge disapproval of an election, which could have ruined us. Also, it was quite an achievement to get Harper to sit down with Ignatieff (twice in one day) and actually negotiate... I like the change from confrontation. In the long run, this might have been a very good move.
